I’ve been spending a lot of time these past few months going through my old photos. Partly to find images relevant to this blog. I haven’t done much traveling in the last couple of years so it’s been interesting to relive some good memories from a few years ago. This black sand beach on an Azores island was one such memory.

A Black Sand Beach in the Middle of the Atlantic

If you ever get the chance, go to the Azores. We only had a few days here, but it was gorgeous and the food was great and there are so many opportunities to get out in nature and do some hiking. Not to mention, the villages are absolutely beautiful. Anyways, on to the pictures.

I am a bit obsessed with moving water. I love rivers and streams and coastlines and watching the water swirl around rocks or cascade over the edge of a cliff. Growing up in the middle of Texas, we don’t have that much in the way of moving water. We have lakes that are brown and some decent rivers a few hours away. So, any time we travel and end up near water, I have to shoot it.

Villa Franca Do Campo

These were taken at the beach in a little town called Villa Franca Do Campo. It’s a short bus ride away from the main city of Ponta Delgada which was where we were staying. I can’t quite remember what made us stop in this town. I think we had an extra day and just wanted to do some exploring without doing any real planning. The beach was a total surprise.

The Azores in Black and White

I typically don’t do black and white photography. I like it, but I don’t shoot with the intention of making black and white images. A lot of these photos just felt right in black and white though. The lighting situation on this beach was really strange. It was bright and contrasty while it was also super cloudy. Most of the color in many of these photos ended up being washed out. So converting them to black and white wasn’t a huge stretch.
